Joshua Wood

Where are you from?

I’m originally from Ballarat, Victoria (90 minutes west of Melbourne) but have been studying at Avondale since the beginning of 2012. Being so close to Melbourne I’m really looking forward to people trying to convince me that Sydney is the better of the two cities (it’s not by the way…)

What degree do you have/are you pursuing?

I currently hold a Bachelor of Management (Human Resource Management) (Tourism) and am completing my Graduate Diploma in Ministry & Theology

What led you to pursue ministry?

I felt a call on my life to ministry when I was a teenager, but continually put it off for selfish reasons. The final ‘push’ was from a lady I like to refer to as the ‘check-in angel’ (it’s an interesting story, ask me about it sometime). After her prodding I was enrolled to study ministry within 3 days and understood that this was where God wanted me to be, which was more important than where I wanted to be.

What are you most looking forward to in your role as Pastoral Assistant with Sydney Adventist Youth?

I’m not an academic. I went to college to learn how to be the best minster I can be.  Unfortunately, academia is the means by which this occurs. Sydney Adventist Youth enables me to understand how the theory of ministry relates to the practice of ministry. I come with a passion for young people and evangelism and am really looking forward to training a group of young people in the area of evangelism in the urban environment that is Sydney. To ignite a passion and fire and share the gospel with people is one thing, but to give them the tools to get out into their communities and minister to them is another thing all together.

What are your outside hobbies/interests?

Travelling, Food, Sports (almost any sort), the idea of reading interests me but isn’t commonly practiced.
