Although it is an uncomfortable subject for many people it has become more and more obvious that abuse is a serious problem for Christians, for Adventists. Abuse in any form deforms the body of Christ—for the victim, for the perpetrator, and for the church that is left with the hurting members.

The fourth Saturday in August has been designated as the Abuse Prevention Emphasis Day throughout the world in all Adventist Churches. Our stand as a church is zero-percent tolerance to abuse of any kind.

This year the focus is on violence against women. There are many stories of human trafficking, young girls forced into prostitution, female genital mutilation, early childhood marriages, domestic violence, forced abortions, rape and on and on.

Please get involved. Each of us CAN make a difference. Here’s how;

1/ Be aware – its important that we don’t ignore the reality of abuse that is happening today. Do you know that one-in-four girls by the age of 18 will be sexually abused in Australia. Do you know that there are more slaves in the world today than at any other point in human history, with an estimated 27 million in bondage across the globe.

2/ Create a culture where it’s ok to share – too many people have been silenced for too long. As children of God we need to listen to others and help them get the help they need. Don’t just love the lovable, love and support those people who come across, cold and difficult, once you get to know their story you may just understand them a little better.

3/ Pray – lets storm the gates of heaven with our prayer and petitions around this topic and expect to see change.

Please prepare for Abuse Prevention Emphasis Day in your church. For a ‘facts pack’ to share on the day please contact Suzanne Hadfield from Safe Places suzannehadfield@adventist.org.au or contact her on 0447 477 548.
