Last week the Mt View Adventist College (MVAC) enjoyed STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Maths) week hosted by the Science and Maths departments. This year’s theme, “Future Earth”. The purpose of the event was to celebrate the National Science Week, an annual celebration of Science and technology in Australia. Established in 1997, National Science Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in science and encourage students to be fascinated by the world we live in.
MVAC staff provided a whole week of programs for students to experience variety of activities that relate to STEM.  On Monday, students from Years 1 – 10 enjoyed viewing the planetarium and learn more about stars, planets, constellations and the outer space. On Tuesday and Thursday, Mrs White and her team provide science activities for students from Prep to Year 10.  Some of these activities enabled students to make plant models and engage in planting in the school garden.  Students were also able to use technology, such as oculus rift and a sphero with ipad.  There was also workshops for Years 5 – 10 students hosted by Blacktown Council and Cleanaway, which taught the students what they could do with their rubbish in order to have a better future earth.
On Wednesday, students dressed up as a scientists or other individuals involved in the STEM field.  Money collected on Wednesday was donated to the Creation Ministry.  On Wednesday, chapels for all three schools were conducted by Dr Mark Wood from Creation Ministry who encouraged students to strengthen their faith where the evidence is.  Certificates to our top scientists in every year group.

This is part of an email from Creation Ministry after Dr Mark Wood’s presentation:

“The hospitality extended, and the helpfulness displayed in so many ways, was greatly appreciated by Dr Mark and the ministry team. Dr Mark asked me to pass along his thanks, “Thank you to Mareta Vaovasa for arranging the Science Week event with CMI.  It was indeed a great delight to speak to such attentive and well-behaved students.  Thank you too for the lunch provided and the warm welcome and hospitality shown by the staff.  It was such a blessing to see the students leading the worship so enthusiastically at the Chapel services.  I pray the Christian witness of the school to the non-Christian students will continue to be truly effective.”

On Friday – we ended up our STEM week with Number Crunch for all classes using Kahoot games to solve problems.  This was aim to have kids enjoying maths on in their house groups.

Thank you to all the teachers, parents and students for supporting this fun and educational week!”  It was definitely a team work.
