We interviewed Roddy Wong, formerly a Mathematics Teacher at Sydney Adventist College to understand how he’s enjoying his retirement and how he is putting his life in perspective.
What was your profession prior to retirement?
I was an director in a Australian company manufacturing toys and gifts for McDonalds, Kellogg’s etc for 16 years. I also have been a Electronic Engineer (13 Years) and a Mathematic teacher in SAC for 16 years.
How did it feel for you when it was time to retire?
I felt a bit sad because I left a language school and a home church in China, but on the other hand I am excited to have the opportunity for ministry back in Australia.
You’re still quite active in your church and in other areas. Can you share what you’re doing with your retirement?
I am active mainly in ministry, especially in translating literature into Chinese due to influx of migrants from China.
What are some tips you’d give to people who are preparing to retire?
One needs to have a hobby and passion other than one’s work. I think serving people is a good thing to do all along and continue into retiring life.
What does it mean to you to be able to spend more time with your family and friends now that you’re retired (are you able to spend more time with them now?)
It’s great to see family, to see your children do well and be able to watch your grandchildren grow up. The most rewarding thing for me is to thank God that my children are all Christians and serving God in their respective churches.
