ADRA Australia’s mission

ADRA Australia’s mission is to work with those most in need – whether they are those who are suffering through poverty or those who have been affected by disaster, or both. We want to be an agency that provides life-altering change for those who come in contact with us – long-lasting and positive change.

How do we go about achieving this? We partner and work with up-to-date, accredited and professional partners, whether it is through government agencies or other ADRA offices. We will always strive to do what is right, and create balanced, fair and equal opportunities and work in responsible ways.

ADRA Australia changes lives in 19 of the world’s poorest countries across Asia, Africa and the South Pacific. We also support Australian’s facing crisis through a range of services including women’s refuges, community meals and refugee support programs. Do you want to reach out and meet the needs of your local community?  ADRA Australia has a range of Local Community Projects that can help you make it happen!

Settle Assist

When refugees migrate to Australia, they can find it difficult to find employment due to many issues.  One of these includes not having a driver’s license.  ADRA’s Refugee Settlement Program assists refugees in gaining their driver’s licenses through volunteers supervising their require driving hours.  This program has been found to be successful in South Australia and is now being rolled out across Australia!  This project also includes a Survival English element, which involves volunteers assisting new migrants with learning basic English skills required to settle in Australia.  Churches can run the English or driving program or both.

Community Gardens

ADRA’s new community gardens project assists churches in developing community gardens with the produce going towards helping people who experience disadvantage. This project has been found to have numerous benefits, including:

• Increasing social connectedness
• Improving mental health
• Increasing sense of belonging

Youth Resilience

You can help to increase the resilience of youth in your community through starting a mentoring program.  There are a variety of resources that are available.  Some churches have connected adults with young people in their community through starting a cycling club and skatepark mentoring.

Seniors Connect

Many seniors across Australia face social isolation.  Because of this, ADRA has started Seniors Connect.  This program can be run out of your church hall and involves running arts, crafts, light exercises and social activities.

Emergency Relief

This project is fundamentally about meeting people’s needs who are in a state of financial crisis through providing food parcels or vouchers, assistance with paying bills, clothing and household goods.

How to Get Started

If you would like to start one of these local projects,

• Form a project committee from your local church
• Decide which of the 5 projects would best meet the needs in your community
• Contact ADRA Australia

• Support
